A new lieutenant’s in town

A new “leash” on life has been given to a dog, whose owner died in a house fire. Gilmer County Fire and Rescue adopted him and made him part of the team.  With her compassion for canines, Sgt. Katherine Evans, took the orphaned dog into her care.

Tricky burglaries at Ellijay convenience stores

Multiple convenience stores in Ellijay have taken financial blows after being burglarized, both within the past month. Repairs made to the hole suspects cut into the wall to break into the store.

SPLOST up for renewal this year

It is time for Gilmer County to renew the SPLOST which pays for bond debt. Gilmer County Chair Charlie Paris told the board at the work session meeting March 18 and the regular meeting March 19 the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) is set to sunset this year.

Two brand-new ambulances in service

Gilmer County Fire and Rescue now has two brand new ambulances in service to help save lives in the community. Division Chief of EMS Will Sergent said it’s been a long time coming, after manufacturing issues caused serious delays.

House fire destroys everything 

A couple in their 60s lived in a home on McCrary Court, off Turniptown Road, for more than a decade, until a week and a half ago, when it burned to the ground.

Extreme weekend weather leaves minimal impact to Gilmer County

Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes ripped through the South over the weekend, but the storms weakened as they moved through Georgia, with no injuries and minimal damage reported in Gilmer. The storms left dozens dead before reaching the state, according to National Public Radio.

World War II casualty Nelson died 80 years ago this week

When John Logan Nelson tried to enlist in the U.S. Army during World War II, he failed the physical. However, Nelson didn’t give up and was finally accepted into military service, according to a family member.
