Drivers passing through part of Ellijay may be wondering what the horrible smell was the other day, or what the substance was sticking to their tires. The Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office described it as a “mystery spill.”
GCSO issued a slick road alert Monday, April 28, around 11 a.m. The slippery road caused hazardous conditions from Old Hwy. 5 at Howard Simmons to Hwy. 382, all the way to the Eagle Mountain gate of Coosawattee River Resort.
They warned drivers to treat it like black ice by slowing down or finding another route to avoid an accident. The Department of Transportation worked to eradicate the issue. No crashes were reported.
The cause: A truck from a processing plant spilled possible animal remains onto the roadway, according to GCSO. The driver of the truck responsible for the spill is still unknown.
