Secretary of State brings news of new machines

During the last week of early voting, Gilmer County citizens were able to get a glimpse of the future. A model of the new voting machines was set up for people to try. Voters in Gilmer County will be using the new voting machines in the next election, as will all voters in Georgia.

An adult who supervised and encouraged children who attended the Three Rivers Boys and Girls Club during the past decade has decided to retire, but she’s not giving up public service or volunteer work just yet.

Historical society lecture to focus on Cherokee removal

The Gilmer County Historical Society’s president will be the guest speaker at an upcoming lecture at the Gilmer County Library. Leslie Thomas will discuss the removal of the Cherokee people from Georgia on the Trail of Tears Saturday, Nov. 16.

Nov. 5 Election Results

Votes have been tallied in the Gilmer County Special Election and the county has a new Post One Commissioner. Hubert Parker was elected to post commissioner for the county with 63.7 percent of the vote. He tallied 1,360 votes.

Gilmer High School has opened an all new coffee shop called Bobcat Brews in the GHS Media Center. Bobcat Brews is operated by GHS Work-Based Learning (WBL) students and all proceeds are donated to the GHS Culinary Arts program. On opening day, Monday, Oct.

Initiative launched to give CCMS students access to Chromebooks at home

Chromebooks have been used at Clear Creek Middle School in recent years, and soon students will be able  to take them home after the school day.   Chromebooks are laptop computers that use a Linux-based Chrome operating system.

Veterans to be saluted with special events

An array of Veterans Day events will be held to salute Gilmer’s military men and women Monday, Nov. 11.  The special day will begin with a complimentary breakfast for all veterans at Ellijay First United Methodist Church, 75 McCutchen Street, from 8:30-10 a.m.
