Ellijay man dies in single-car accident

An Ellijay man was pronounced dead at the scene after his vehicle struck a tree and a power pole and caught fire. Wes Hackle, 23, of Ellijay, was traveling east on Clear Creek Road at 1 a.m. on Oct. 4 in a 2006 Kia Sorento, according to the Department of Public Safety Public Information Office.

Apple Festival Parade to be held Saturday

The annual Apple Festival Parade will be held in downtown Ellijay Saturday, Oct. 19. Applications are required to participate in the parade. They can be downloaded from GeorgiaAppleFestival.org or picked up at the Gilmer Chamber office.Deadline to return applications is Friday, Oct. 18.

Visitors who stop by the Gilmer Chamber’s Downtown Ellijay Welcome Center between Oct. 11 and 20 will be greeted by a display that pays tribute to a late Ellijay man who’s been described as reclusive, brilliant and ahead of his time.

Citizens ask board to keep Carters Lake facilities open

Extra chairs were brought in the Board of Commissioners meeting room to accommodate the citizens who showed up at a special called meeting. Still some citizens had to stand during the Oct. 8 meeting.

$1 million in cuts facing commissioners

Gilmer County’s Commission Board is facing the prospect of cutting $1 million from the budget requests they received last week. Chairman Charlie Paris said the budgets presented by the department heads had $500,000 more in spending than projected revenues.
