Family Literacy Night draws 1,029

The Gilmer County School System held its annual Family Literacy Night at Huff-Mosley Memorial Stadium last Friday. The event drew 1,029 people to Pettit Field as the county’s students visited booths hosted by GHS clubs and sports programs, as well as local organizations and businesses.

Ellijay man charged with murder

An Ellijay man has been charged in the death of his uncle. Joshua Robert Weaver, 39, of Ellijay, was charged with murder and aggravated assault. Another relative discovered Crate Hollis Weaver, 65, dead in the yard of a residence on Roy Road at 11:49 a.m.

School employees receive one-time $2K bonus

Gilmer County School System employees are set to receive a $2,000 bonus in their April paycheck. The influx of cash arrives after Gov. Brian Kemp signed an amended budget for fiscal year 2022. The one-time payment will be delivered to public state employees at the university and K-12 levels.

Early voting for primary starts May 2

Early voting for the upcoming general primary election will begin Monday, May 2, and it will be the first county election voting to occur since passage of Georgia’s Election Integrity Act last year. All in-person early voting will be done at the Gilmer County Registrar’s Office, 1 Broad Street.

World Series Trophy coming to town

Ellijay is among a handful of north Georgia cities that will soon welcome the traveling World Series Championship Trophy won last year by the Atlanta Braves. The trophy has been on the road since February, and 151 dates are included in the tour of the Southeast.

Walmart property appeal headed to Superior Court

One of two outstanding property appeals the Gilmer County Assessors Office has left for 2021 will head to Superior Court, and it’s from one of the county’s biggest retailers.
The property at 17 Barclay Street, formerly the practice of Dr. Robert Bond, has been rezoned to accommodate apartments.

Ellijay council OKs rezoning former doctor’s office

The Ellijay City Council approved a zoning change that will allow a handful of apartments to be built in a former doctor’s office building. The zoning change from GC (general commercial) to R3 (multifamily residential) was made official for 17 Barclay Street during an April 18 council meeting.

Members of the Gilmer High School Marching Band didn’t just experience the Magic Kingdom on a recent class trip. They marched and made music as a guest band in one of Disney World’s famous town parades.

The Ellijay Downtown Development Authority (DDA) has approved a resolution recommending several parallel parking spaces on River Street be permanently barricaded.
