Unofficial election results from the May 24 primary show Gilmer County Post Two Commissioner candidates John Marshall and Tom Whatley will head to a runoff on June 21. In school board races, Michael Bramlett (incumbent) won for Post 4 and Jacob Callihan for Post 5.

Justin Elliott Memorial Tennis Tournament to raise funds for youth projects

Tennis players are needed to fill two local courts for a fundraising tournament hosted by the Gilmer County Optimist Club. The second annual Justin Elliott Memorial Tennis Tournament will take place Saturday, June 11, and Sunday, June 12.

Valedictorian, salutatorian announced

Luke Bryant was named the Gilmer High School Class of 2022 valedictorian. Kinsleigh Purvis was named salutatorian. Commencement exercises are scheduled for Saturday, May 28, at 10 a.m. at Huff-Mosley Memorial Stadium. Gates will be open at 8:30 a.m.

Responders exposed to Fentanyl

Two Gilmer County deputies and five EMS personnel were hospitalized following exposure to suspected Fentanyl at the site of a vehicle crash. “All seven exposed members have been treated and released from the hospital,” said Gilmer County Public Safety Director Keith Kucera.

Early voting high for primary election

As Election Day commenced, 3,406 Gilmer County voters didn’t have to worry about setting time aside for the Tuesday, May 24, primary. That many had already voted early in person, according to the Gilmer Registrar’s Office. “We couldn’t ask for better in early voting.

GHS auto students receive tools of the trade

Two of the top students in the auto tech program at Gilmer High School (GHS) should have little trouble finding the right tools for future repairs.

The timing couldn’t have been better for recent paving of a cut-through road adopted last year by the City of Ellijay. Shrine Club Drive was paved last week, just a few days before the Tuesday, May 24, general primary election in which the nearby Coosawattee Shrine Club was used as a polling place.

GCSS pledges to ‘keep students fed’

The Gilmer County School System has money to keep its kitchens stocked, now it just needs to find someone willing to deliver the food. Gilmer and surrounding school systems are in a similar pickle as distributor U.S. Foods appears to be no longer interested in doing business in the K-12 sector.
