Hotel/motel tax passes first vote

Gilmer County’s hotel/motel excise tax moved one step closer to rising from 5 percent to 8 percent. Gilmer County commissioners passed the first of two votes on the issue following a public hearing on the matter May 12.

County’s housing issues discussed, questioned at DDA meeting

Discussion of the county’s housing shortage and participation in a state housing plan development program became heated at times as the Ellijay Downtown Development Authority (DDA) heard comments from a concerned citizen and personal stories from local professionals at City Hall last Tuesday.

Property assessment notices mailed

The Gilmer County Board of Tax Assessors approved real and personal property value notices for 2022 when meeting last Friday. Real and personal property assessment notices were scheduled to be mailed out Monday, May 16.

Plenty of locally-grown plants, and advice on how to make them prosper, can be found at an upcoming plant sale presented by the Garden Club of Ellijay. Local Garden Club members will hold the plant sale Saturday, May 21, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at the Lions Club Fairgrounds, 1729 South Main Street.

Big Creek polling place moves

Gilmer County election personnel are reminding voters who previously cast their ballots at the Big Creek Fire Station that the Big Creek precinct’s polling place will move come Election Day.

Strip Teaser comes home

A dragstrip race car once well-known in and beyond Ellijay has found its way back home. Strip Teaser II, a customized 1965 Ford Falcon formerly owned and raced by Ellijay businessman Bob Thomas, was recently purchased by Bob’s son, James Thomas.

Local man drowns in Allatoona Lake

A man who drowned in Allatoona Lake was identified as a Talking Rock resident. Charles Matthews, 37, was swimming in the lake when a witness on the shore saw him in distress, according to a Georgia Department of Natural Resources incident report.
