Downtown speed signs are back

Speed detection signs that have been absent from downtown Ellijay for several weeks are back up and running.  The signs were taken down because they needed to receive some routine maintenance, confirmed Ellijay Police Chief Edward Lacey.

Assessors office works through cyberattack

The Gilmer County Assessors Office expects to have all property assessment notices finished and mailed by the expected date despite a recent cyberattack, which caused problems for several county government offices.

Record-setting pet clinic

At a Friends of the Gilmer Animal Shelter (FOGAS) drive-thru vaccination clinic held Saturday, April 27, 476 pet vaccinations were given and 33 low-cost spay/neuter certificates were provided to the community. The clinic was held in the courthouse parking lot on Broad Street.

Vietnam chopper specialists reunite 53 years after service

When his deployment in Vietnam was drawing to a close, helicopter mechanic Mike Finch was made an offer he could have refused — sign on to stay five more months in the war zone and then when he returned stateside, he would be free of the Army.

Scott Chastain named Outstanding Probate Judge

The Council of Probate Court Judges of Georgia (CPCJG) honored Gilmer County Probate Judge Scott Chastain as its 2023-2024 Outstanding Probate Judge of the Year honoree. The Outstanding Probate Judge Award is voted on by probate judges across the state of Georgia.
