Warm water isn’t only obstacle for improving Gilmer trout fishing

From a trout’s perspective, some Gilmer County streams resemble empty pavement. “If you want to stay there, you can, but you’re going to go,” Dr. Steve Jones, a former Clemson University professor with expertise in ecology and years of river restoration experience said.

Pet Food Pantry in need of support

It’s hard to choose between feeding yourself and feeding your pet, a Gilmer Community Pet Food Pantry volunteer said. But when that choice comes, most people who attend the food pantry would rather let their pet eat, volunteer Mindy Petzer said.

A traffic light went dark at the Highway 515 and First Avenue intersection during morning commute hours. The traffic signal went out at some point before 6:45 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8. The intersection is one of Gilmer’s busier road connections. At 6:45 a.m.

Explosion at Roo Mountain Vineyards

A gas explosion at Roo Mountain Vineyards left two people injured and property damaged. “This is too early to know exactly what happened,” Gilmer County Public Safety Director Sam West said. Right now, the incident is under investigation by the Georgia Fire Marshal Office.

Railroad crossing on State Route 52 closed starting Sept. 2

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will close two railroad crossings this week on State Route 52/South Main Street and State Route 282/Industrial Boulevard. “Watch for crews driving slowly in these areas,” GDOT Communications Officer Joe Schulman said.

Traffic stop turns into meth bust

When Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office deputies pulled over a gray Chevrolet Colorado, they didn’t expect to make a major meth bust that would expose an interstate drug operation. But their efforts resulted in the seizure of 9 ounces of methamphetamine, according to a GCSO press release.
