Two women injured; causes still under investigation
A gas explosion at Roo Mountain Vineyards left two people injured and property damaged.
“This is too early to know exactly what happened,” Gilmer County Public Safety Director Sam West said.
Right now, the incident is under investigation by the Georgia Fire Marshal Office.
On the scene, medics diagnosed the two people injured with second-degree burns. These burns are bad enough to go into the deeper layer of the skin.
However, this diagnosis may change as hospitals learn more, he said.
Roo Mountain Vineyards made a public announcement about the incident.
“Our hearts are heavy today at Roo Mountain Vineyards. Yesterday, an accident occurred on our property that resulted in two women being injured. While details are still unfolding, what matters most to us right now is their health and recovery.”
Roo Mountain’s owners and team were praying for both women and their families, and asked for the prayers of the community, the announcement said.
They were airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital and Erlanger Hospital, West said.
The fire department responded to the fire, secured the area and made sure the gas was shut off.
After the initial flash fire of the explosion, there was no further fire, West said.
“Just a flash fire, and it was out,” he said. “Keep your gas appliances serviced. If you smell any propane or natural gas, call 911.”
