State Route 282 will also close
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will close two railroad crossings this week on State Route 52/South Main Street and State Route 282/Industrial Boulevard.
“Watch for crews driving slowly in these areas,” GDOT Communications Officer Joe Schulman said. “Make sure you’re driving slow and be careful.”
The rail lines on both these roads no longer get use, so GDOT plans to replace them with normal pavement.
Patriot Rail will remove the rails at the crossings, and GDOT will pave them.
Work on the State Route 52 railroad crossing began 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2 and ends Thursday, Sept. 4.
Drivers there will have to take a detour around Depot Street.
Work on the State Route 282 railroad crossing will begin Wednesday, Sept. 3 and finish by Friday, Sept. 5.
Both railroad crossings will be closed until GDOT finishes the work.
Bad weather could change this plan.
There, drivers must follow a detour onto Progress Road, then take Maddox Drive to move around the roadwork.
The end result of this change will be a slightly smoother driving experience on both these roads.
“It’ll make it a smooth ride for everybody and probably help keep traffic moving just a little bit faster,” Schulman said.
GDOT doesn’t have plans for the parts of the railroad track that cross private property.
“That’s between them and Patriot Rail,” Schulman said.
