Gilmer County Health Department changes locations

The Gilmer County Health Department (GCHD) is moving to a new location.  From Friday, Aug. 15, onward, the GCHD will be at 822 Industrial Blvd, Suite 100 in Ellijay. While moving, the GCHD will be temporarily closed from Wednesday, Aug. 13, to Friday, Aug. 15.

100-year-old barn brings memories of past to life

To outsiders driving by, the barn in Cherry Log may look like a picturesque frame of aging boards. But to Ronnie Herendon, it’s a standing reminder of the world he grew up in.
The Cooperative Extension Service office in Ellijay at 1123 Progress Road is serving as the site for community members to drop off diapers for clients of the local Department of Family and Children Services. Donations will be accepted on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., and diapers can also be picked up by CES staff members by contacting the agency.

Dixie Wigington has seen her son Jasper’s goofy personality, his growing faith in God and his passion for old cars. She has also seen his bones showing through his skin. At 3 years old, Gilmer boy Jasper Wigington is fighting a malignant rhabdoid tumor, a rare form of cancer.

Gilmer opens cooling shelter

With temperatures in the 80s and 90s on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Gilmer County Emergency Management (GCEM) opened a Cooling Center for those without air conditioning.

Animal shelter has no easy solutions to overpopulation

If Gilmer County Animal Shelter (GCAS) had double the shelter space it has now, it still wouldn’t fix pet overpopulation issues. “That would help us for now, but it’s not going to fix the problem,” Director Kelly Pickering said. Right now, the shelter has 125 cats and 74 cats.

Sometimes, a firefighter’s job can be exhausting. Sometimes, it can be heartbreaking. And sometimes, it can be fun. At 64 years old, experienced firefighter Division Chief Jeff Statham said he enjoyed testing Gilmer County Fire and Rescue’s (GCFR) new underwater drone.
