The Gilmer County Board of Tax Assessors underwent a change of leadership during its first meeting of the year Thursday, Jan. 20.
Bill Logan, previously the board’s vice chairman, was elected chairman, while board member Jerry Davis was elected vice chairman. There were no opposing nominations or “nays” cast for either change.
Davis has previously served as the assessor board’s vice chairman, while this will be Logan’s first term as chairman.
Outgoing chairman Gary Engel told board members that he plans to run for Post 2 county commissioner and has signed a letter of intent to do so. The primary election for Post 2 commissioner will be held May 24.
“Thank you all. It’s nice to work in a team where everybody just (pitches) in and does what needs to get done. I especially thank the staff,” said Engel, who’d served as the board’s chairman since January 2020.
In other news …
Board members approved the assessors office having a working relationship with Amicalola Electric in which the office’s GIS (Geographic Information System) data will be used by the electricity provider. The normal charge for requested GIS data is $250, but the fee was waived.
Amicalola will provide their updated mapping information back to the assessors office and the county 911 office, said Theresa Gooch, chief appraiser.
“They’re looking to update their GIS mapping with our parcel data. As they mark these transmission lines, stations and things that can be helpful to us and 911 addressing, they will exchange back the data. They’re trying to work with all the counties in their service area,” she added.
