Gilmer Fire looking for ‘homegrown’ employees

Gilmer County Fire and Rescue is looking to recruit more firefighters and EMTs with a new training and certification program, which will start in August. Like many of today’s public safety agencies, Gilmer Fire is dealing with a staffing shortage, confirmed Fire Chief Daniel Kauffman.

Seamless Summer meal program returns June 6

The Gilmer County School System’s Seamless Summer feeding program is set to begin in next Monday. Free meals will be available Monday through Friday at eight locations throughout the county and are open to those who are 18 years old and younger. Returning once again are Summer STEM Camps.

Finish line in sight for Fuller

Forty-nine states with a half marathon completed in each one. That’s the progress made over the last seven years by Ellijay’s Allison Fuller, who’s closing in on her goal to run a half marathon in all 50 states. Fuller, 28, plans to reach that goal in June.

Ellijay CAP cadets receive Spaatz Award

Two young cadets with Gilmer County’s Civil Air Patrol (CAP) composite squadron recently achieved a feat reached by a very small number of CAP cadets. Last week, twin brothers George and Noah Powell both received the prestigious Gen. Carl A. Spaatz Award.

Unofficial election results from the May 24 primary show Gilmer County Post Two Commissioner candidates John Marshall and Tom Whatley will head to a runoff on June 21. In school board races, Michael Bramlett (incumbent) won for Post 4 and Jacob Callihan for Post 5.

Justin Elliott Memorial Tennis Tournament to raise funds for youth projects

Tennis players are needed to fill two local courts for a fundraising tournament hosted by the Gilmer County Optimist Club. The second annual Justin Elliott Memorial Tennis Tournament will take place Saturday, June 11, and Sunday, June 12.

Luke Bryant was named the Gilmer High School Class of 2022 valedictorian. Kinsleigh Purvis was named salutatorian. Commencement exercises are scheduled for Saturday, May 28, at 10 a.m. at Huff-Mosley Memorial Stadium. Gates will be open at 8:30 a.m.
