Bramlett, Callihan win school board races
The race for Gilmer County’s next Post Two Commissioner will head to a runoff in June.
Candidates John Marshall and Tom Whatley received the most votes in the Post Two race, but neither finished with the 50 percent plus one vote total needed to avoid a runoff, according to the Gilmer County Registrar’s Office.
Results from the May 24 primary election show Marshall received 3,421 votes (44.98%), Whatley received 2,838 votes (37.31%) and Gary Engel received 1,347 votes (17.71%). Vote amounts and percentages include early voting, absentee ballots, provisional ballots and Election Day voting.
In other local races, incumbent Michael Bramlett won the race for Gilmer County Board of Education Post 4. Bramlett received 4,089 votes (50.80%), while Michele Penland finished closely with 3,961 votes (49.20%).
Jacob Callihan won the race for Board of Education Post 5. Callihan finished with 4,730 votes (59.84%), while Sam Snider received 3,175 votes (40.16%).
Incumbent Gilmer County Commission Chairman Charlie Paris, who ran unopposed in the primary, finished with 6,667 votes, according to election results.
The runoff election for Post Two Commissioner will take place Tuesday, June 21. Early voting will be available, but the dates have not been announced yet.
