Progress Road paved

Paving started last week on a portion of Progress Road from the intersection with Maddox Drive to the Old Highway 5 intersection. Progress Road is one of several streets scheduled to receive some sort of paving work budgeted by the City of Ellijay.

Stuff the Bus to collect school supplies

The Gilmer County Optimist Club hopes to literally stuff a bus full of supplies during its 11th annual back-to-school drive. The 2023 Stuff the Bus school supply drive will take place from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, July 21, and Saturday, 22, in front of the East Ellijay Walmart.

East Ellijay native Wood retires as city planner

When Mack Wood came home to East Ellijay after retiring from a long career with General Motors, he intended to take it easy for a while. That lasted about three years, until the East Ellijay native became the city’s planning and permitting official.

Woman dies in July 3 accident

A Dunwoody woman was killed in a single vehicle accident in Gilmer County the day before Independence Day. Kimberly Kyser Trump, 45, was driving a 2022 Polaris Ranger on Greeley Road located in Coosawattee River Resort on July 3, at around 4:30 p.m.

Qualifying for city elections starts in August

Qualifying will start soon for two 2023 city elections. In Ellijay, all five city council seats will be up for election, while all four council seats will be on the East Ellijay ballot. The mayoral seats for both cities will also be up for election this year.

Board of Health briefed on opioid abuse response program

Members of the Gilmer County Board of Health heard, during their June 13 quarterly meeting, about a program in the North Georgia Health District (NGHD) that provides resources to deal with opioid abuse in the six-county region.

John Davis to be honored

John Davis has been recognized once again for his exploits on the gridiron. Davis is a 1983 Gilmer High alum and one of 40 players set for induction into the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame.
