Property owners have until July 7 to appeal their county-assessed values. That date is the end of the 45-day appeal period for those who’ve received assessment notices.

Parks and rec advisory board gets footing

Eight members of the Gilmer County Parks and Recreation advisory board held their first meeting. Gilmer County’s Board of Commissioners joined the group June 22. “I’m impressed with this group,” said Post Commissioner Hubert Parker.

Thirteen graduate from sheriff’s office CLEA program

Members of the 2023 Gilmer Sheriff’s Office Citizens’ Law Enforcement Academy (CLEA) class completed the program last week with a better understanding of how the local law enforcement agency operates and stories to tell about the time they spent shadowing the officers.

Walters named tennis head coach at GHS

Rachel Walters is Gilmer High’s third new head coach  heading into the 2023-24 school year. She will take over the head coaching duties of the tennis program following the retirement of Donna Parks. Walters is a GHS alum and graduated from the University of Georgia in 2019.

Sara Mosley continues to be one of the top softball players in the country. The Gilmer High alum just wrapped up her fourth season at the University of Georgia, and she added more individual accolades to her expansive list of achievements.

Inflation, shortages impacting food pantry

During much of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Gilmer Community Food Pantry had plenty of food to distribute, but served a much smaller number of clients than before the pandemic started.

Gilmer EMS crew recognized for lifesaving efforts

A recent call handled by a Gilmer County EMS crew highlights both the types of emergency calls our first responders answer each day and the miles they sometimes cover when transporting patients to a hospital.

Gwen McArthur was a high school senior when she first started working part time for Ellijay Telephone Company (ETC) in 1972. She graduated from Gilmer High School on a Friday night and, by the following Monday, was working full time for the phone company. “I was 16.
