Ellijay council approves lodging tax hike, paving work

The Ellijay City Council approved raising the city’s hotel-motel tax and chose contractors to pave various city streets when meeting Monday. The second reading of an ordinance to increase the city’s lodging tax from 5 to 8 percent was given at the meeting with no opposition or public comment.

Water board OKs $5.4 million operating budget

Ellijay-Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority board members approved a 2023-24 water authority operating budget of $5.4 million when meeting Tuesday, May 30. The new fiscal year’s budget is up 13 percent from the 2022-2023 budget of $4.8 million.

Three dogs raise concern at shelter

The Gilmer County Animal Shelter recently decided to euthanize three dogs that, after being at the shelter for more than a year, have been deemed unfit for adoption due to public safety risks.

BOC creates parks and recreation board

A long-discussed parks and recreation advisory board for Gilmer County now has members. Gilmer County Commissioners each named three appointees to the board and then named a chair and vice chair for the group at a regular meeting June 8.

Missing teen located and returned home

UPDATE: The Gilmer County Sheriff's Office announced earlier today that Kade Miller has been located and returned home. ----- Gilmer County Sheriff’s deputies are asking for help in locating a runaway juvenile. Kade Miller, 16, has been reported missing.

Fireworks avoided in firework stands issue

As July Fourth draws near, the City of East Ellijay will again allow seasonal fireworks vendors to operate within the city limits. That reverses a decision made last year when the city council voted to no longer allow the fireworks stands.

Higher water and sewer rates, fees start July 1

Higher water rates and fees for several Ellijay-Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority services are right around the corner. The water authority will switch over to a higher rate/fee schedule July 1.

Old park rest rooms come down, new ones on the way

Gilmer County’s River Park will soon have rest rooms at the beginning, middle and end of its walking path. Jody Cantrell, Gilmer Parks and Recreation director, confirmed this as demolition of old rest room facilities continued last week.

TAVT rate back to 7 percent starting July 1

Georgia residents who buy or lease a motor vehicle will soon be paying more than the reduced Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) rate that’s been in effect the last three years. The reduced TAVT rate of 6.6 percent of a vehicle’s fair market value was provided by the General Assembly starting Jan. 1, 2020.
