County set to begin paving 44 roads

Gilmer County commissioners are spending $8,128,249 to pave 44 roads this summer. The board awarded the final bid for tar-and-chip paving of 30 roads at a special called meeting June 27, to put the final piece in place.

There was excitement around the downtown Ellijay square Monday morning, when fire trucks and ambulances suddenly lined River Street and South Main Street. They were responding to a call involving smoke in the building that houses Ellijay Wood Fired Pizza.

County cannery open for season

The Gilmer County Cannery is open for its 2023 season. The first day of the new canning season was Tuesday, June 27, but the facility was closed the following Tuesday due to the July 4th holiday. It will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays until December. Hours are 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

Vaping among the county’s students was referred to as “prolific,” an “epidemic” and “major concern” by school district leaders. The topic was once again discussed during last week’s Gilmer County Board of Education meetings as the district revamps its code of conduct for students.

July Fourth events include morning parade, fireworks at dark

Ellijay’s Fourth of July festivities will start ringing in Independence Day a few hours earlier this year. The festivities, previously held in the afternoon and evening hours, will get going at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday with a parade through downtown Ellijay. The parade theme is “Star-Spangled Summer.
