Qualifying for two city elections Aug. 21-23

The qualifying period draws near for two local city elections. Both Ellijay and East Ellijay will hold elections for mayor and city council later this year. Qualifying for both elections starts Monday, Aug. 21, and runs through Wednesday, Aug. 23.

Excellent exhibits at county fair

Members of the Ellijay Lions Club and Apple Country Quilters were busy judging the Gilmer County Fair’s exhibit entries Monday, Aug. 14. All the entered exhibits will be on display for public viewing during the fair, which runs Aug. 15-20 at the Lions Club Fairgrounds.

County mourns firefighter’s passing

Gilmer firefighter/EMT Eric Maddox’s nickname, “Tigger,” reflected his happy, zany personality, which was not unlike the spirited, bouncing “Winnie the Pooh” character. “He was probably the happiest person I have ever met,” said Gilmer County Deputy Fire Chief Mark Chastain.

Five were airlifted after recent 52 East crash

It’s long been known as Gilmer County’s Apple Alley, but a large number of car crashes has made Highway 52 East a frequent destination not only for travelers and tourists, but also emergency response vehicles.

Lower Cartecay bridge gets start date

Construction on the Lower Cartecay bridge is set to begin October of this year. The date comes out of a meeting between representatives of Georgia Department of Transportation and Talley Construction, which was awarded the bid, said Gilmer County Director of Public Works Ryan Steingruber.

Harrison Park to hold first ‘Barniversary’

The Friends of Harrison Park are throwing a birthday party — not for the team of park boosters themselves, but for a 100-year old barn that’s the anchor of the downtown Ellijay walking park. They will hold Harrison Park’s first-ever Barniversary Saturday, Aug. 12, beginning at 1 p.m.

Extension office announces new 4-H agent, search for new ag agent

Gilmer County’s UGA Extension Office said goodbye to an agriculture extension agent, while also welcoming a new 4-H agent, last week.  Ashley Hoppers, who’s been the ag extension agent for Gilmer and Fannin County since 2019, completed her last day in that role Friday, Aug. 4.
