Bramlett passes at 70

Longtime Gilmer County Board of Education member and avid Bobcat fan Michael Bramlett has passed away.
Bramlett, 70, died last Saturday, Aug. 26. He was a lifelong Gilmer County resident and worked 42 years in the banking industry before retiring from Truist in 2020.

The Gilmer County Library is not only a place to check out a book on loan. You can also buy one (or many) to take home for $2 or less apiece.
The library’s used bookstore, The Bookshelf, is run by volunteers, most of whom are members of the Friends of the Gilmer Library (FOGL).

South Main Street paved

New asphalt was put down along an almost 1-mile stretch of South Main Street last week as part of the City of Ellijay’s ongoing 2023 paving projects. Above, the newly paved southbound lane is open to traffic, while the northbound lane awaits completion.

Quilt of Valor a special honor for Ellijay veteran

An Ellijay veteran was honored with the presentation of a special quilt prior to an Aug. 21 city council meeting.
Navy veteran Greg Sandway received the handmade Quilt of Valor from representatives of the Georgia Quilts of Valor organization and the Pickens County-based Pine Needle Quilt Guild.

Property digest passes state review, but failed in one area

Gilmer County will be able to collect public utility taxes at the full 40 percent rate this year, but is still out of compliance in one area of the current property digest according to a recent review by the Georgia Department of Audits and Appeals (DOA).

County M&O millage rate stays same

With a two to one vote, the Gilmer County board of commissioners voted to keep the maintenance and operations budget millage at 5.5 mils for 2023.
Post commissioners Hubert Parker and John Marshall voted to maintain the rate rather than implement a rollback rate.
