Historical museum set for new season

Gilmer County’s only historical museum will open for its 2024 season this week.  The Tabor House Museum, located at 138 Spring Street, is set to open to the public Thursday, March 21. It will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Three qualify for BOC Post 1 race

  Several incumbents and a handful of new candidates have qualified for the upcoming county primary election.  The qualifying period ran through Monday, March 4- Friday, March 8.
The new Gilmer County Swimming Pool has been filled with water, and all that remains of the  project is completion of rest room and concession stand renovation.

May opening expected for county pool

If all goes as planned, the new Gilmer County Swimming Pool will be open for summer.  Construction of the pool at the Gilmer County Civic Center has been completed.

Meeting turns into third public comment period

A special called meeting of the Gilmer County commissioners to work on the short-term rental ordinance turned into a third public comment period. The March 5 meeting followed two public comment periods on Feb. 28. Post Commissioner John Marshall attended the meeting by Zoom.

McVey voted GACA all-state

Gilmer High junior basketball player Jackson McVey was selected to the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association’s Class 3A North All-State Team. McVey led Region 7-3A with 26.2 points, 15.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game while shooting 65.3 percent from the field.

The Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) will have 19 class members along for the ride in this year’s Citizens Law Enforcement Academy, which kicked off Tuesday with an orientation and welcome from Sheriff Stacy Nicholson at the Gilmer County Courthouse Jury Assembly Room.

Jim Parmer is a candidate for Post 1 Commissioner in Gilmer County. He is a longtime educator (50 years) and was a school administrator (pre-K through 12th grade) for 29 years. He retired as a command sergeant major (USAR) with 24 years in military service.

Warrants likely in Hwy. 52 accident

Highway 52 East was shut down for nearly seven hours after a Feb. 20 accident involving a log truck that overturned after being struck by another vehicle. That wreck is among the latest in a growing list of automobile accidents to occur on a section of the busy highway near Ridgemont Drive.
