GCSO, GBI to partner for safer internet workshop

The Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) will team up for a special event that’s open to the public, but is especially of note to parents of school-age children. The Safer Internet Day workshop will take place Tuesday, Feb. 6, from 6-8 p.m.

Craddock Center to host Songs and Stories event rescheduled for March 9

The Craddock Center will welcome back a folk singer and a storyteller who’ve previously delighted audiences there for a free event that combines both those forms of entertainment.  Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Songs and Stories event planned for Saturday, Feb.

Majority in favor of rec center

Attendees at a town hall called by Gilmer County commissioners to gauge interest in a recreation center were overwhelmingly in favor of the project. Ellijay Elementary School’s auditorium was close to capacity for the meeting Wednesday, Jan. 17.

County agencies had few issues during cold snap

Last week’s freezing cold snap caused one school systemwide closing (which meant a digital learning day for students) followed by a two-hour delay the next day, but no big issues for local utilities or emergency management agencies.

The Ellijay City Council welcomed two new members at its first meeting of 2024.  New mayor pro tem Claudia Penland and councilmember Thomas Griffith were elected to their first terms in November.

Assessor board names officers, updates policies

The Gilmer County Board of Assessors updated several assessors office policies and named board members for 2024 during its first meeting of the new year.  Assessor board positions will remain the same for the year, with Bill Logan continuing as chairman and Jerry Davis as vice chairman.
