The public is invited to attend a community Memorial Day service at which America’s fallen military men and women will be remembered.
The service will be held at the Veterans Memorial Bridge and Park, located at the south end of River Park on South Main Street, beginning at 11 a.m. Monday, May 27.
Don Murray, one of the event’s organizers, said such groups as the Civil Air Patrol, Gilmer Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard, Boy Scouts, American Legion Post 82, Knights of Columbus and Daughters of the American Revolution and Confederacy will be assisting in presentation of the event.
Greg Sandway, a local veteran who served in Operation Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, will be the master of ceremonies. The service’s guest speaker will be Appalachian Judicial Circuit Juvenile Court Judge Jan Wheeler, who is also an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, Murray noted.
“When she was in the Army, she was in the Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps,” Murray said.
Parking will be available at the lots inside River Park and at the Lions Club. Murray said the veterans park site was not damaged by flooding that occurred due to recent heavy storms.
“We were lucky it didn’t cause any damage,” he added.
