An hour-and-a-half standoff ended peacefully when the suspect who shot at Gilmer County deputies surrendered.
Ryan Timothy Hanrahan, 48, was charged with aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer when engaged on official duty, according to the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office app.
Deputies were dispatched to the area of Rogers Creek Road and Pleasant Gap Circle May 10 at 3:45 p.m. to check on a male making threats of self-harm, said Gilmer County Captain Frank Copeland.
Hanrahan was located in a wooded area. He fired a round at the deputies, said Copeland.
The suspect then entered his vehicle and drove it farther into the woods along a logging trail.
“He was in the vehicle, and he wouldn’t respond to officers other than to say get out of there,” Copeland said.
After an hour-and-a-half, Hanrahan exited his vehicle and was taken into custody. He will be medically and mentally evaluated, according to a statement from the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office.
During the incident, an alert was sent for residents in the area of the Rogers Creek Road, Pleasant Gap and White Pine Circle to shelter in place.
