Responsible outdoor recreation focus of trail fest

An event that’s focused on promoting the area’s abundant outdoor recreation activities and how to enjoy them responsibly will put down stakes this weekend.  The third annual Georgia Mountain Trail Fest will take place at Reece’s Cider Company, 9110 Highway 52 East, beginning at 9 a.m.

Ellijay Police: Side by sides only legal on county roads

The Ellijay Police Department is putting out a friendly warning for drivers of side by side UTVs. The utility task vehicles, for which a license plate can be obtained, can only be legally driven on county roads. They are not permitted to be driven on city streets, interstates or state highways.

County candidate forum set for April 22

Candidates in the upcoming county election will have a chance to explain their platforms, answer questions and meet with the public at an upcoming forum hosted by the Gilmer Chamber. The candidate forum will take place Monday, April 22, at the Piedmont Community Center, 824 Industrial Boulevard.

Gilmer County School System’s superintendent Dr. Brian Ridley was recognized by the Georgia School Superintendents Association as a 2024 President’s Award recipient April 10. “It’s my honor, but really this is the result of all of our hard work,” Ridley said Monday evening.

Nine stores cited for gaming machine violations

Representatives of nine Gilmer County convenience stores will soon have administrative hearings with the Georgia Lottery after the stores were issued citations relating to illegal cash payouts from coin-operated amusement machines (COAMs).

Two house fires displace families

Two Gilmer County families lost their homes to fires over the last few weeks.  On March 25, a fire on Wolf Pen Trail engulfed the home owned by Johnny and Donna Warren, soon spreading to the surrounding woods.
