TCSG announces $3M funding for GCCA

The State Board of the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) approved the allocation of more than $3 million to establish a new college and career academy in Gilmer County during its May board meeting.

As around three dozen people gathered on a sultry afternoon in the cemetery of a country church last week, the thought had to cross a few minds of what was going on in Army Private Ira Denton Cochran’s world 106 years earlier.

Ellijay council reads amended alcohol ordinance

By Michael Andrews Mountain Life Editor   Ellijay City Councilmembers gave the first reading of an amended ordinance that adds a North Main Street location to the area of downtown where businesses can be considered for a distilled spirits pouring license when meeting May 21.

Veterans memorial crosses going up

Road cleanup, repairs continue

Repairs and storm debris removal continued along Gilmer County roads last week. At one point, there were 102 entries on the county road department’s damage list following the destructive line of thunderstorms and at least one tornado that moved through May 8-9.

Memorial Day service at veterans bridge park Monday

The public is invited to attend a community Memorial Day service at which America’s fallen military men and women will be remembered.  The service will be held at the Veterans Memorial Bridge and Park, located at the south end of River Park on South Main Street, beginning at 11 a.m. Monday, May 27.

Mountain Wisdom to begin 21st camp in July

A nature camp designed to help teenage boys build leadership and life skills will enter its 21st season this summer.  The weeklong Mountain Wisdom summer camp will run from July 8-13, said “Hawkeye” Jay Zipperman, founder of the local Mountain Wisdom nonprofit.
