At least one tornado confirmed

The National Weather Service has determined at least one tornado touched down in Gilmer County as a severe storm system ripped across the county and upper north Georgia late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.  Gilmer was under a tornado warning beginning around 10:30 p.m.

Man surrenders after shooting at deputies

An hour-and-a-half standoff ended peacefully when the suspect who shot at Gilmer County deputies surrendered. Ryan Timothy Hanrahan, 48, was charged with aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer when engaged on official duty, according to the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office app.

No injuries in sudden truck fire

A dumptruck fire was an unusual emergency last week near the roundabout at Old Highway 5 and Highway 382. Fortunately, no one was injured, confirmed Gilmer Fire and Rescue.
The Gilmer High School Class of 2024 valedictorian and star student is Allyson Muller. Caden Farist earned salutatorian. Commencement exercises are scheduled for Friday, May 24, at 7 p.m. at Huff-Mosley Memorial Stadium. Gates will be open at 5:30 p.m.

GHS graduation to be held May 24

Gilmer High School will hold commencement ceremonies Friday, May 24, at 7 p.m., at Huff-Mosley Memorial Stadium. The gates open at 5:30 p.m. with no reserved seating.   As this is a dignified event, the audience is expected to act with decorum.  Dress comfortably, but no tube tops, halters, etc.

State GOP removes Pritchard from office

In a 146-24 vote, the Georgia Republican Party voted to remove First Vice Chairman Brian K. Pritchard from office. “Today’s vote demonstrates how serious we take election integrity,” said Georgia GOP Chair Josh McKoon in a statement.

Songwriter fest to cover two weeks starting May 20

A live music event that was held for the first time in 2023 will expand to two weeks worth of singer/songwriter performances this year.  The Ellijay Songwriters Festival will run from May 20-June 2 with more than 70 shows at 15 local venues, noted Ray Green, festival promoter.
Taking part in last Friday’s dedication of the Rose Cemetery were, left to right, the Rev. Steve Fields, Jennifer Anderson, Jane Tischler, Susan Noles, Jean Tolbert (hidden), Erin Brandy, Danette Ozment, Judy Price, Lydia Bassetti, Barbara Murray, Rodney Anderson and Faye Cawthon. Many are members of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (Capt. James Kell Chapter), and others are with the Gilmer County Genealogical Society.

Refurbished Rose Cemetery dedicated

Sixty-seven graves covered by brush and almost forgotten have been found and marked in a refurbished cemetery on Gilmer County’s east side.
