Propane truck fire caught in time

A propane truck fire on South Main Street Monday night caused the street to be closed and evacuations to be made within the immediate area around the fire.  The Ellijay Fire Department responded just after 8:30 p.m.

Fire station to be named for Maddox

A Gilmer County fire station has been dedicated to a fallen first responder. The Tails Creek fire station on Highway 282 was dedicated to Eric Maddox, who passed away suddenly last year not long after a shift. Station 14 was where Maddox was assigned.

County makes offer on second office building

Gilmer County commissioners are looking at purchasing an office building owned by Piedmont Hospital. Board members voted to allow Gilmer County Chair Charlie Paris to make an offer on the building following an executive session during a special called meeting Aug. 19.

Gheesling earns rank of colonel in USAF

A month and a day after graduating Gilmer High School in 1999, Russell Gheesling reported for boot camp. Yet not just any basic training, but a multiweek regimen before the start of college at the United States Air Force Academy.

Beekeepers getting new apiary ready to flourish

The Beekeepers of Gilmer County will be using a new apiary at a local vineyard to educate the public about the importance of the honeybee.  Establishing the apiary, located at Buckley Vineyards, was a “community project,” said Bill Emery, the club’s vice president.

Drainage work starting at Highlands shopping area

Around two months of roadway repair work is planned for perhaps the most heavily-traveled thoroughfare in Gilmer County — the northernmost entrance to Highlands at East Ellijay, also known as Highlands Crossing Shopping Center. Fortunately, the work will be underground and performed at night.
