East Ellijay Mayor Don Callihan told council members the project at Highlands Crossing is finished.
“That last check was a big check,” he said.
All that is left is some patching of potholes.
Damage to the almost 550-foot long storm drain that runs under Highlands Crossing was found after a severe storm system, which produced tornadoes in the county, rolled through May 8-9.
“You’ve got a 54-inch pipe that the bottom of it has corroded away, so the storm water is running on just bedrock basically. We’re trying to get that (water) back in the pipe where it belongs,” said East Ellijay Safety Director Larry Callahan.
“Our fear is that, in a heavy enough rain, it might get to the outside of the pipe and create a void that would cause a sinkhole or something like that. So we’re trying to make sure we address that ahead of time.”
Mayor Callihan said the project cost $517,000.
