Hurricane relief arriving from Gilmer County

Supplies for those in western North Carolina, South Carolina and parts of Tennessee affected by the devastation of Hurricane Helene have been arriving from Gilmer County by plane and truck. A team of local residents affiliated with a local distillery has been among those making the supply runs.

Lower Cartecay crossing reopened

Gilmer County Chair Charlie Paris cuts the ribbon for the opening of the new Lower Cartecay Bridge. The bridge was replaced by the Georgia Department of Transportation at a cost of $4 million after roughly 5 years of being closed.

Speed tables on North Avenue

New speed tables have been installed on North Avenue in an effort to curb speeding on the heavily traveled downtown street. The Ellijay City Council recently approved the tables going in after hearing comments from multiple North Avenue residents.

Voting begins in Gilmer County

Voters were lining up as the Gilmer County election office opened for the first day of early voting. County residents lined up to cast their vote on Oct. 15, the initial day for early voting. By 9:30 a.m., 175 had voted. The number had increased to 399 by 11:45 a.m.

Gilmer County commissioners are looking at cutting $3.6 million out of the requests they have received for the 2025 budget. Gilmer County Chair Charlie Paris said commissioners concluded three days of meetings with department heads and elected officials over requested budgets.

Early voting for presidential election starts Oct. 15

Gilmer County voters will be able to get a jump on casting their ballots for the presidential election when early voting begins Oct. 15. The early voting schedule will last until Nov. 1 and include two Saturdays. Times are 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays.

Community steps up with relief

Gilmer County citizens filled up more than two tractor-trailers with supplies for hurricane relief. “We may be a small community, but we’ve got a huge heart,” said Gilmer County Fire Chief Daniel Kauffman. “I’ve been more than proud of a community that stepped up in a big way.
