During hyperphagia, it’s more important to be ‘bear wise’!

A fed bear is a dead bear! This axiom is not referring to a black bear eating acorns, berries, larvae, insects or even honey. It is referring to the intentional and often unintentional food, known as attractants, which humans provide each and every day to black bears.

County dips toe into Carters Lake

Gilmer County commissioners are mulling going to Carters Lake. More accurately, they are studying the possibility of creating a county department to take over anywhere from one to four recreation areas at the lake now operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Ellijay Lions celebrate 85th birthday

On the eve of the Ellijay Lions Club’s 85th birthday, members observed that only two other Lions Clubs in the state of Georgia have been around longer.  The local club officially turned 85 July 27. An official charter from Lions Clubs International was granted on that date in 1934.

Good Samaritan Church to hold flea market Friday, Saturday

A flea market that’s become a destination for bargain hunters and browsers will mark its 17th year of fundraising when Ellijay Good Samaritan Catholic Church presents the 2019 resale event this Friday and Saturday.  The flea market will take place at the Lions Club Fairgrounds from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

Election set for November

Gilmer County voters will go to the polls Nov. 5 to cast ballots for a new Post 1 Commissioner to finish the unfulfilled term of Dallas Miller. “We can’t really call for a special election until after Sept. 13,” said Gilmer County Probate Judge and Election Superintendent Scott Chastain.
