DDA continues parking, pedestrian safety discussion

After recently forming two committees to focus on different areas, members of the Ellijay Downtown Development Authority’s safety committee talked about ideas for improving parking and pedestrian safety in downtown Ellijay while meeting at City Hall last Tuesday.

A festival designed to celebrate and promote Gilmer County’s plentiful outdoor recreation options may finally be able to launch next year.  The first 7 Trails Fest was originally scheduled for 2020, then later tentatively rescheduled for this summer.

$1.4 million donation for animal shelter

Gilmer County’s animal shelter will receive $1.5 million in expansions and improvements because of generous donors. Initially, Chairman Charlie Paris was offered $200,000 for improvements at the shelter at the end of 2020 if the county would set aside $100,000 for the project.

For the second season in a row, Matthew Waddell has earned his spot among the nation’s elite collegiate wrestlers. Waddell is a Gilmer High School alum and currently a junior at the University of Tennessee —  Chattanooga. The Mocs traveled to Boone, N.C.

Voter registration board referred

In its third meeting in February, the state election board referred “dozens of cases” of alleged election violations to prosecutors. Among those referred was the Gilmer County Board of Voter Registration.

Water authority looking at May finish for Roundtop expansion

The Ellijay-Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority is looking to finish a large-scale expansion of water service to the Roundtop Road area by this May, water authority director Gary McVey noted while giving project updates at a brief Feb. 22 board meeting.

North Hall forfeits state title

Gilmer High was defeated by North Hall in the state duals wrestling finals Jan. 30, and the Trojans used an ineligible wrestler. The wrestler in question was later disqualified in the middle of the traditional state tournament Feb.

Local gun carry applications up for 2020, so far this year

Numbers for 2020 show the Gilmer County Probate Court office received almost 800 more applications for gun carry licenses last year than in 2019. “It’s been an interesting year (with gun permits), and 2020 was an interesting year on a lot of different levels,” said Probate Judge Scott Chastain.
