Welcome to Gilmer County ...
With pride, the staff of the Times-Courier presents you our Information Please. Welcome to our publication and welcome to our county.
Last year, our yearly magazine was delayed until the summer because of the pandemic. This year we have moved the publication to April from May. We did this for two reasons. First we wanted to get a jump on welcoming our visitors and people who are moving into our area. Second, this year we will be offering a summer magazine for visitors to our beautiful mountains.
As the year progresses, vaccination numbers increase, we are looking forward to returning to some normal activities in our county.
In this edition we bring your stories of our past, present and our future of Gilmer County.
Mark Millican will take you on an investigation of the gold rush in Gilmer County. Our neighboring county is cited as the gold rush hot spot, but what was our role?
Whitney Sherrill will offer her expertise in the outdoors of the area. Where to hike, bike and the sights to see while you are out and about this spring whether you are a resident on a Staycation, a returning fan of our area or if this is your first time coming to our home.
Throughout we have stories about organizations and people which make up the backbone of the community — volunteers and volunteer organizations. Michael Andrews runs through a historical look at Ellijay mayors through the years.
We even have a list of organizations, in case you want to roll up your sleeves and get involved.
We encourage you to look at our map and notice our orchards and vineyards which abound in the community. They are wonderful places to visit and enjoy the local flavors of Gilmer County.
And, if you are a visitor and we have convinced you to join us in our mountain life, we have a number of professional and energetic real estate agents to help you find a home to call yours.
We also have helpful hints about services, local politicians and tax rates.
Our Information Please has something for you whether visiting or working and we hope it brings back memories for some and helps create new memories for others.
