An Aldi supermarket planned for East Ellijay has begun filing its preconstruction paperwork, East Ellijay’s city planner told city councilmembers during a council meeting last Tuesday.
The grocery chain has applied for a land disturbing permit hat’s been sent off to be approved, said City Planner Mack Wood in his report to councilmembers on Callihan, Linda Smith and Ed Forrester.
Wood said a site plan has also been submitted for the store, which is expected to be almost 20,000 square feet. It will be located off Howard Simmons Road next door to Auto Zone, he added.
“It will come in off of Howard Simmons and (go) down to their building, and the road will stop. The parking will be on the right as you go in,” Wood said. “Each one of them is site specific. Once they get their permit, they select their contractor.”
The East Ellijay council was informed earlier this year that Aldi, a German discount grocery company with more than 2,100 locations in the U.S., had interest in the property just off Highway 515.
A tree-clearing plan to increase visibility of the store first had to be approved by the Georgia Department of Transportation, and that has since been taken care of, Wood noted.
“They did get the permit to cut the trees down, and they will be coming,” he confirmed.
