Forging ahead on a hot metal horse

A steel sculpture that recently went up in Johns Creek brings an Ellijay sculptor and blacksmith’s inspiration of horses full circle. Metal artist Eric Strauss officially unveiled his 12-foot, 4,000-pound creation, “Entwined Strength,” at a dedication ceremony in Johns Creek last weekend.

Commissioners deal with paving, other issues

At a meeting where commissioners dealt with several issues, the board locked in an asphalt paving contract for 2022. Colditz Trucking Inc. was awarded a bid of $2,975,177 for paving all or portions of Legion Road, Flat Branch Road, Roberts Ridge Road, Turniptown Road and Mulkey Road.

Early voting hours extended

Gilmer County voters have an additional hour to cast their ballots in person each day this week. The voter registrar’s office announced that in-person early voting for the June 21 runoff election will be extended by one hour Monday, June 13-Friday, June 17. The new times are 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

Water board OKs $8.5 million budget for 2022-23

The Ellijay-Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority board approved an $8.5 million operating budget for the water authority’s 2022-23 fiscal year when meeting Tuesday, May 31. The budget for the fiscal year starting July 1 is up from last year’s initial $7.8 million budget.

The Benton MacKaye Trail Association (BMTA) is one big step closer to its goal of having the near 300-mile hiking path declared a National Scenic Trail.
