The Cherry Log Community Action Group, a community based charity, established in 1971, announces its annual festival will be held the first two weekends in October (Oct. 1-2 and 8-9) at the Cherry Log Community Clubhouse, 341 Cherry Log Street.
This local festival offers an authentic taste of southern nostalgia for those who are looking for a change of pace from the crowds of other area festivals.
Breakfast will be served beginning at 7 a.m. Lunch will be served until 3 p.m., or until food runs out. The reasonably priced and delicious breakfasts and lunches of the festival are well-known locally.
The festival, which is manned by local volunteers, features local arts and crafts, entertainment, a variety of home canned items such as chow-chow, pickled vegetables, sauerkraut, jams and jellies, apple butter and Brunswick stew, as well as fresh vegetables and hot boiled peanuts.
The old-fashioned glass-canned goods are competitively priced and sell out each year.
Scrumptious fresh homemade bakery treats, as well as snacks like hamburgers, hot dogs and site-made fresh apple butter fried pies, are also available.
The annual Cherry Log Festival raises funds that are used to assist local families and organizations.
The community action group, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, provides, on average, temporary financial assistance to two to three needy local families each month, and also contributes to the Gilmer Community Food Pantry.
Dale Alsobrook and her husband, David, contribute countless hours as the group’s chair and vice chair. Sandra Key serves as treasurer, and Sheila Davis serves as secretary. Board members include these officers and Paige Jennings, Ronnie Herndon and Linda Johnson.
The well-deserved reputation for delicious food and treats is due, in no small part, to the devoted efforts of Betty Davenport, the 80-something amazing kitchen boss, and her volunteer helpers.
The action group meets at the clubhouse the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. for a delicious covered dish dinner and business meeting. Visitors and new members are welcome.
Cherry Log is a small community geographically located in both Gilmer and Fannin counties. The clubhouse serves as the voting location for Gilmer County’s Cherry Log precinct and is available for rent to members and nonmembers.
Volunteer members contributed funds and labor to recently repaint the clubhouse and are working on refurbishing the peanut shed. Sisson Log Homes Building Supply and the Pink Pig Restaurant have made significant contributions to the projects and mission of the group.
As the annual festival nears, Dale Alsobrook is accepting additional vendors, as well entertainers of any genre. If you are interested in participating in this worthy small-town charity festival, you may reach her at 706-273-1023.
