John Weaver poses with the prosthetic leg he lost in the Cartecay River four years ago; a diver from Tennessee found it downstream recently. Of the tattoo of a cross on his arm, he said there were “no doubts” God has helped him on his journey, and he wants it to be a witness. “That’s the reason I put it there,” he said.

At an archaeological dig during the construction of Carters Dam in the mid-1960s, the man in the checkered shirt may be Dr. A. R. Kelly of the University of Georgia, with high school students who helped with the unearthing of relics. Regional historian Greg Cockburn said it appears from the photo that layers below the original ground level of the village are being removed. “I also remember the circle they painted on the rocks that’s in one of the photos in the 1963 Red and Black article,” Cockburn said.
