Water board OKs exploring Carmeuse property as groundwater source

Ellijay-Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority board members gave the go-ahead for the water authority to explore using the Carmeuse mines in southern Gilmer County as a potential groundwater source when meeting Monday, July 25.

Open house next week for GCSS

Gilmer County students and parents will have the opportunity to see what lies ahead for the upcoming school year. The Gilmer County School System will hold open house at its six schools next Tuesday, Aug. 2.

Ellijay council no-votes distillery license

An Ellijay distillery remains without a license to operate after the city council neither approved nor denied an application for a new license. The microdistillery license application came before the Ellijay City Council during a Monday, July 18, meeting at City Hall.

Plans for Gilmer portion of scenic byway route to be revisited

Plans for the Gilmer portion of a proposed scenic bypass route that also includes roads in Pickens and Dawson County will be revisited following a public meeting held last week.

DDA talks housing, fundraising

The Ellijay Downtown Development Authority (DDA) discussed plans for an upcoming expanded meeting that will focus on local housing issues, while also exploring possible future fundraising opportunities, while meeting Tuesday, July 12.

Assessor board OKs bulk of tax digest

The Gilmer County Board of Assessors approved the bulk portion of this year’s property tax digest when meeting Friday. The gross digest figure, which includes real and personal property values, stands at $6.6 billion, which is over $1 billion more than last year.
At an archaeological dig during the construction of Carters Dam in the mid-1960s, the man in the checkered shirt may be Dr. A. R. Kelly of the University of Georgia, with high school students who helped with the unearthing of relics. Regional historian Greg Cockburn said it appears from the photo that layers below the original ground level of the village are being removed. “I also remember the circle they painted on the rocks that’s in one of the photos in the 1963 Red and Black article,” Cockburn said.
