Board of Health hears COVID updates

New strains of COVID-19 are causing an uptick of cases in Gilmer, as well as other North Georgia Health District counties, the district’s public health director told Gilmer Board of Health members at the board’s quarterly meeting last week.

Board considers short-term rentals ordinance

Gilmer County commissioners received recommendations about a short-term rental ordinance for the county. A group led by Gilmer County Director of Planning Jim Smith put together a proposed ordinance and gathered information surrounding the subject for the board.

Restaurant owner, water board chairman Gibbs leaves legacy

Mike Gibbs, a longtime local restaurant owner and water authority board chairman, is being remembered for his witty personality and dedication to his business and appointed post.  Gibbs passed away Friday, Sept. 15. He was 72.

Shayne Evans got caught in the shuffle when his family moved from Florida to Ellijay. Before the journey north, he was scheduled to graduate high school in the Sunshine State in 2020 through an accelerated program.

Bryant named new deputy fire chief

A Gilmer Fire and Rescue (GFR) firefighter/EMT is proud and honored to be named the county’s new deputy fire chief.  Jason Bryant has been with the fire department since 2021 and most recently led its C shift as battalion chief.

Ellijay native continuing outreach mission in Haiti

An Ellijay native is making good on her mission to educate impoverished children in Haiti. Dedra Key was enjoying some time with family in her hometown last week before returning to Ouanaminthe, Haiti, where she’s lived since 2013.

Board approves half-million for wastewater plant repairs

Members of the Ellijay-Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority board approved using a half-million dollars for repairs at the wastewater treatment plant, as well as other expenses for projects, when meeting Monday, Aug. 28.
