Gilmer County commissioners have unanimously expressed their support for a recreational center.
A resolution was passed by the board at a special called meeting Sept. 5.
“I have mentioned that we have tried to obtain grant money for this and that we have an appointment or meeting with the speaker [of the Georgia House of Representatives] to discuss this,” said Gilmer County Chair Charlie Paris. “What I am told is it is very important to the speaker when you make this sort of request to him that there be a resolution approved by the entire full board.”
He said the resolution would be presented to the speaker when they ask for funding.
Commissioners have had various discussions about building a recreational center for Gilmer County since a town hall was held with the parents of children involved in the Gilmer County parks and recreational programs.
Suggested amenities for the facility have included an indoor court for basketball and volleyball, an indoor walking track and possible meeting rooms.
A resolution was not presented, but Paris said it would include a statement of support by the commissioners and a brief description of the facility.
Post Commissioner Hubert Parker asked to see a draft once the document was created.

﹣ Commissioners tabled a discussion to give the Tabor House an additional $1,000 for utilities.
﹣ Approved transmitting a 2023-24 Annual Update of the Capital Improvements Element for Gilmer County and the cities of Ellijay and East Ellijay for review.
﹣ Tabled a discussion about allowing employees to retire, begin drawing retirement and then become re-employed by the county.
