Short-term rental enforcement pushed to April

Gilmer County commissioners decided to delay enforcing the county’s short-term rental ordinance until April, blaming the vendor GovOS for the change. “They just haven’t gotten it together, yet,” said Gilmer County Chair Charlie Paris. “We felt like we had to postpone it.

FOGAS breaks new ground with pet scanners, Snippet Bus

The Friends of Gilmer Animal Shelter, known as FOGAS, is pioneering two new programs that are helping pet owners locate their animals and also endeavoring to keep the local dog and cat population in check. “Pet scanners” are a device that helps pet owners find their lost animal.

Gilmer gets public safety director

Gilmer County commissioners revived the position of county public safety director. Ellijay Fire Chief Sam West was hired for the position and started work Monday, Nov. 18, at a salary of $80,000 according to Gilmer County Chair Charlie Paris.

Christmas in Ellijay

Christmas in Ellijay begins Friday, Nov. 29, with a fun afternoon of activities sponsored by FOGAS. This event will be centered on Broad St. in front of the courthouse downtown.  While strolling downtown, check out the restaurants and shops for all your unique Christmas gift needs that day.
Veterans Day keynote speaker Niki Melendez was deployed during the War on Terror, and received a battlefield promotion to staff sergeant before leaving the U.S. Army in 2015. Her husband Sam Melendez was an Army Ranger during the war; the couple are still involved with the Shelter Dogs for Veterans organization in Talking Rock.

GHS football heads to state playoffs

Gilmer High learned last Saturday evening it had secured one of Class 3A’s two at-large state playoff spots. GHS is ranked No. 28 out of 32 teams, and the Bobcats will travel to North Hall Friday to take on the No. 5 ranked Trojans at 7:30 p.m.

County officials eye Amendment 1 impact

Gilmer County commissioners and school board officials have a decision to make before March 1, 2025, about Georgia’s newly passed Constitutional Amendment 1. “That’s going to cost the county a lot of money,” said Gilmer County Chair Charlie Paris.

Toy gun found at CCMS

A sixth grader was removed from school for possession of a toy gun at Clear Creek Middle School. “A student came to school with a toy pistol, some other students saw it and reported it,” said Gilmer County Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Ridley. The incident occurred Monday morning, Nov. 11.

Gilmer County voters turn out in droves

In the final tally, 78 percent of Gilmer County registered voters turned out to cast a ballot. A total of 18,571 out of 23,768 registered voters showed up, according to the Georgia Secretary of State’s website. Voting reached 50 percent during early and absentee balloting.
