Sheriff’s Office warns of “brushing scam”

The Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office wants you to watch out for a scam involving deliveries at your door. It’s called a “brushing scam,” where scammers are sending people fake items like speakers or jewelry, with the goal of boosting their sales of the knock-off item.  Here’s how it works.

Sheriff’s Office warns to stay off roads

This story has been updated as of 1 p.m. All roads in Gilmer County have become “treacherous” and “impassible” from the winter storm, according to Gilmer County deputies.

Schools to close due to winter storm

This story has been updated as of 3:17 p.m.   Gilmer County schools will close their doors Friday, as a major winter storm heads our way. “We want all of our students and staff to be safe,” Gilmer County Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Ridley said.

Chick-fil-A closing for renovations

Last call this week for Chick-fil-A fans in Gilmer County as the local restaurant closes for a lengthy renovation. “It will be a brand-new restaurant in a lot of ways,” said Gilmer County Chick-fil-A Restaurant Operator Betsy Salzmann. The store is 99 percent certain to close Thursday, Jan.

Local Boys and Girls Club merges to increase impact

The Boys and Girls Club of North Georgia is merging, but most people won’t notice. The club serving Gilmer and Pickens counties has combined with The Boys and Girls Clubs serving Chattooga, Gordon, Murray and Whitfield counties.

Fire department merger possible

Merging the fire departments of Gilmer County and Ellijay is on the table. Just right at the edge of the table. It was mentioned at a county budget meeting Dec. 18. Gilmer County Chair Charlie Paris said he has mentioned the possibility to Ellijay Mayor Al Hoyle.
Toys for Tots coordinator, U.S. Marine Sgt. AJ LeCompte, noted there is room for 32 volunteers to wrap Christmas toys on the second floor of Truist Bank in East Ellijay, although at one time they accommodated 38 wrappers. He said Gilmer County was the only site in the country out of 836 Toys for Tots locations where the toys are wrapped. LeCompte said more than 10,000 Gilmer County children have been assisted in the past 15 years, with 3,465 kids total in the last two years.

Gilmer Toys for Tots donates almost 6,000 toys

A local effort to supply toys for underprivileged children at Christmas reached its 15th year in 2024, and utilized dozens of volunteer gift wrappers and a heavy-metal rock concert to raise funds. Gilmer County Toys for Tots coordinator, U.S. Marine Sgt.

Deputies awaiting autopsy results

Gilmer County sheriff investigators are awaiting autopsy reports to determine the cause of death for a man found dead in early December. The body of  a 68-year-old male was found Dec. 1, half in a creek close to the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge at River Park in Ellijay on the soccer field side.
