Speed limits on North Main Street will be lowered if an ordinance is approved by the Ellijay City Council. The council had a first reading of the ordinance when meeting last Monday.
A speed study that was recently done advised lowering several speed limits on the part of North Main that runs from Church Street to Highway 515.
The ordinance supports lowering the speed limit from Church Street to just south of Parks Avenue to 25 miles per hour (mph), from that point to .26 of a mile south of Call Wright Road to 35 mph and from there to Highway 515 to 45 mph. Currently, the speed limits range from 35 mph at Church Street to 55 mph approaching Highway 515.
“We’re trying to correct our speed zones and make them proper and make sure they are well signed. We don’t want to be a police department that’s playing gotcha or anything like that. Voluntary compliance is what we’re looking for,” said Ellijay Police Chief Edward Lacey.
Lacey noted some work also needs to be done in a few other places.
“We’ve got South Main Street, especially between Progress Road and 382 and Progress Road needs some work. North Avenue is also (a) priority,” he added.
The speed limit ordinance will undergo a second reading before it can be voted on by the council.
