Board passes short-term rental ordinance

Following months of work and 18 versions, Gilmer County commissioners passed a short-term rental ordinance. Gilmer County’s short-term rental ordinance provides for licensing and governing the industry in the county. It is set to take effect Jan. 1, 2025.

Vietnam memorial wall tribute returning

A replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall in Washington, D.C. is coming back to Ellijay. The American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) wall has been on display here twice before — first in 2014 and again in 2018.

Downtown Ellijay will once again celebrate Independence Day with a parade, fireworks and other July Fourth festivities.  The day will get started at noon Thursday, July 4.
Gilmer Fire and Rescue received almost $4,000 worth of wildfire fighting equipment from a grant supplied by the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) and U.S. Forest Service. Gilmer is among 10 Georgia counties with fire departments receiving wildfire fighting equipment courtesy of the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC).

Board OKs $6.1 million water authority budget

Ellijay-Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority board members have approved an operating budget of $6.1 million for the authority’s 2024-25 fiscal year, which starts July 1. The 2024-25 budget is up nearly $660,000 from the current year’s budget of just over $5.4 million.

Tentative terms on TSPLOST

Pending approval by the boards of Ellijay and East Ellijay, an agreement has been reached on the split for a proposed TSPLOST. Gilmer County commissioners voted at a special called meeting in May to add a TSPLOST to the ballot this November.

Early voting set for BOC Post 1 runoff

Early voting for the Gilmer Board of Commissioners (BOC) Post 1 runoff will begin Monday, June 10. The five-day early voting period will run through Friday, June 14. There will be no weekend voting hours.  In-person voting can be done from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

‘Life Skills’ celebrates successful year

There were plenty of smiling faces at the Life Skills Transition Program’s annual celebration. Gilmer High School recognized the students in the program Wednesday, May 15, at the Larry Walker Education Center.
