Pay, benefits issue for Gilmer Fire

Gilmer County Fire and Rescue is losing staff members to nearby departments. Officials point to insufficient pay and limited benefits to explain poor retention rates that could become a public safety concern.  Gilmer Fire had four open positions in December.

Commissioners hold public hearing on zoning changes

Commissioners are trying to make it easier for medium and high-density complexes to be built in Gilmer, addressing concerns over housing affordability.  The board voted to amend part of the Land Development Ordinance after holding a public hearing on Friday, April 11.

Community Food Pantry suffers major loss

A freezer malfunction has caused the Gilmer Community Food Pantry to lose more than 8,000 pounds of frozen meat they needed to feed hungry families, a supply that took months to accumulate.

Two local men are breathing new life into Oakland Elementary School, which closed in 2011. They plan to highlight its historical impact to the community, while converting the space into a climate-controlled storage facility.

Stolen barriers, warning signs cause crash

A construction worker from Pickens County is recovering after he drove off a back road south of Ellijay that was completely washed out. He blames Gilmer County officials for not alerting drivers of the “danger” ahead.
