Labor shortage hits public safety

Gilmer County is feeling the labor shortage pinch not just in the private sector, but in the public sector as well. Two areas experiencing the shortage are law enforcement, firefighters and EMTs. “We are getting very few people applying,” said Gilmer County Sheriff Stacy Nicholson.

**Breaking News** Due to rain forecast for Saturday, the trick or treating event will be held Sunday, Oct. 31!!   Downtown Ellijay’s Halloween trick-or-treat festivities will return to Harrison Park this Saturday.

A program and lunch that salutes local military veterans will return to the Ellijay Lions Club Fairgrounds this Veterans Day. The honorary program will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11.

Ellijay council adopts city’s 2022 budget

Ellijay City Council-members adopted a $2.38 million operating budget for the coming fiscal year when meeting Monday, Oct. 18, at City Hall. A millage rate of 2.3 mills was also approved at the meeting.

Driver escapes after high-speed chase

Troopers are looking for the driver of a vehicle who eluded law enforcement following a high-speed chase ending in a P.I.T. maneuver. The chase began with a trooper checking speeds on State Route 5. A 2017 Nissan Rogue traveling south was clocked at 86 mph.

Members of the Gilmer County Board of Tax Assessors discussed, and eventually tabled, a revised policy for vehicle use by staff members when meeting last Thursday.

Gilmer County Public Safety extinguished the competition at last Saturday’s Harrison Park Chili Challenge with a first-place win for their “No Bones About It… You’ll Love Our Chili” entry.

After stepping down as Gilmer Chamber president last year and returning to manage this year’s 50th annual Georgia Apple Festival, retiring festival coordinator Paige Hutto has said “the longest goodbye” to the event she steered since 2013.

A colorful stretch of wildflowers along Highway 515 near Highland Parkway has recently become a popular roadside photo op. Anyone who passes by the flowers during daylight will likely see cars pulled over with people snapping photos amongst the vivid display.
