At Monday’s Gilmer County Board of Education work session, it was announced that the district is in the process of implementing new routing software and adding fleet global positioning systems to its buses and maintenance vehicles.

Citizen of the Year 2021 nominations now open

Started in 1986 with Gene Jones as the first recipient, the Gilmer County Citizen of the Year (COTY), A Lifetime Achievement Award, has been awarded annually since. Merle Naylor was selected as the 2019 Citizen of the Year, adding her name to the prestigious list.

County budget nearing completion

Gilmer County’s 2022 budget is reaching its final planning stages.
“As of right now, we don’t have a final budget, but we have a balanced budget,” said Gilmer County Chair Charlie Paris.
He said the maintenance and operation budget is in place, but may see some fine tuning.

Billy Edmond shared his love of baseball with his two oldest sons, Charlie and Eric. In their first game on Okinawa, where the family was settling into life at an Air Force duty station, Charlie hit a home run on the first pitch of the game. Eric socked a homer on the second pitch.

A 12-foot statue of a cartoon squid now standing just off Highway 52 East is an official homage to the animated program Squidbillies.
