Ellijay’s Faith, Hope and Charity Recycle Store Inc. recently made a donation of $5,000 to a relief effort for the city of Mayfield and Graves County, Ken.
Both areas received extensive damage from a Dec. 10 and 11 tornado that hit western Kentucky.
Kentucky’s death toll from the tornado numbered 77 as of Dec. 27, according to a USA Today report. Several tornado-stricken counties, including Graves where Mayfield is the county seat, are still in the very early stages of rebuilding.
“We can’t imagine what they are going through. Our hearts are broken for them,” said Cheryl Worley, FHC board chairwoman.
The FHC donation to the Mayfield-Graves County Tornado Relief Fund was made possible by the recycle store’s loyal customers and volunteer staff, noted Worley. One of the thrift store’s volunteers also contributed an additional $1,400 to the relief fund, she added.
Faith, Hope and Charity normally focuses its outreach efforts only within Gilmer County where numerous nonprofits, programs and individuals in need are assisted with funding that originates from thrift store sales.
“It normally stays in Gilmer County, but everybody was in agreement that this was the thing to do,” Worley said.
