Ellijay council hears chamber talk on hotel-motel tax

As the Ellijay City Council explores possibly raising the city’s hotel-motel tax rate at some point, councilmembers heard a presentation from Jennifer Grimmer, Gilmer Chamber president and CEO, during a workshop that preceded a Nov. 15 council meeting at City Hall.

Car club continues charitable donations

A local car club continued its tradition of making year-end charitable donations to several local organizations and nonprofits last week. So far, the Apple Country Auto Club has split a total of $6,000 between six groups, confirmed Ronnie Prater, club president.

Plastic bags a priority at food pantry

The Gilmer Community Food Pantry is always in need of a particular item, which is not edible or spendable. The local food provider’s supply of plastic grocery bags has recently dwindled down, said Allen Triebel, food pantry director. “(Last week), we almost had none.

Gilmer Arts quilt exhibit opens at gallery Dec. 3

It’s the time of year when we pull out the sweaters and quilts and cozy up to the fire. To honor that, Gilmer Arts will open its annual Fiber Arts Exhibit Friday, Dec. 3. The Gilmer Arts Gallery,  located at 207 Dalton Street, will host an opening reception from 5-7 p.m.

Light Up Ellijay returns to square Nov. 26

Downtown Ellijay’s popular Christmas parade and visit from Santa is back on track this year, following an absence from the town square in 2020. Light Up Ellijay festivities will take place the day after Thanksgiving — Friday, Nov. 26 — beginning at 6 p.m.

A slow response was seen at the Gilmer County Health Department during its first full week offering COVID-19 vaccinations for children age 5-11. Only seven COVID vaccinations were given for that age group from Nov.
