A ruptured water line along Legion Road led to the cancellation of Monday’s classes at Gilmer High School.
The Gilmer County School System was alerted of the situation in the early hours after cafeteria workers arrived to begin meal preparation. Shortly after discovering no water was available in the kitchen, Dana Berry’s phone started ringing.
“The information that was provided to us, was that over where Georgia Power is doing some work, they didn’t say they struck any water main, but said they may have hit some rock that collapsed and fell in on it,” said Berry, who is the district’s director of human resources and facilities.
“We had to cancel classes for three reasons. There was no water for food prep, or for rest rooms and the fire suppression system also runs off the water.”
The Ellijay Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority was called to the scene, and Berry said all water services were restored at GHS by 12:24 p.m. Classes resumed Tuesday morning.
